e-Census

What is e-Census?

Designed to collect all the relevant data for each of the school censuses at the touch of a button. It only asks for the data it 'knows' you haven't got – anything relevant that you have entered is already automatically included.

What data is collected about schools?

  • School characteristics module (Termly) - information about a school’s
    name and specific characteristics (example: phase, type, governance)
  • School location module (Spring only) - school address information
  • Admissions appeals module (Spring only) - information about admissions
    appeals is required from primary, middle deemed primary, secondary
    Voluntary Aided and Foundation schools only
  • Class information module (Spring only) - information about class type and
    size
  • Miscellaneous module (Spring only) - information on free school meals
    taken

What data is collected about pupils?

Depending on the phase and type of the school the return will contain some or
all of the following pupil level modules

  • Pupil identifiers module (termly) - information about the identity of a pupil,
    example: name, gender, date of birth, UPN, ULN
  • Pupil characteristics module (termly) - information about the characteristics
    of a pupil, example: ethnicity, language, disability
  • Pupil status module (termly) – information about a pupil in relation to the
    school, example: enrolment status, date of entry
  • Special educational needs module (termly) - information on the special
    educational needs of a pupil
  • Exclusions module (termly) - information on permanent, fixed period and
    lunchtime exclusions. The Spring Census collects information on exclusions
    that occurred during the previous Autumn term, the Summer Census during
    the previous Autumn Term and the Autumn Census during the previous
    Spring Term.
  • Home information module (Spring only) - information about where a pupil
    lives during term time
  • Termly Attendance module (Termly) - all schools - except nurseries and
    special schools - are required for each Census for all pupils of compulsory
    school age to submit information on absences that occurred during the term
    prior to the census, example: Summer Census collects information on absences
    that occurred during the Spring term
  • Annual attendance Module (Autumn only) - special schools submit data
    in the Autumn Census for absences that occurred during the previous
    academic year
